I feel connected to the world through the sound and culture of Malay people. I want to share that feeling of connection and encourage listeners to enjoy it and try to discover their own version of it.

Umar Zakaria is a New Zealand bassist and composer filled with hope for the future. In 2018 he was named Best Jazz Artist by Recorded Music New Zealand. Influenced by the musical traditions of his Malay heritage, Umar will be playing a mix of original Malay jazz arrangements and compositions accompanied by local Auckland musicians, guitarist Michael Howell and drummer George Brajkovich.
